Junior Art Show

The Junior Art Show was held on Monday 4 December. The night was a huge success and a fantastic way to celebrate the end of the year with a bang.

The guest speaker for the event was Anthony Breslin, who has also been facilitating the Year 9 Mural Project at the East Campus. His ongoing collaboration with ��ܽ��Ƶapp has allowed us to provide meaningful opportunities for our students to witness professional artmaking.

Anthony was also asked to select a Guest Speaker award on the night; one artwork which he felt was outstanding and demonstrated creativity and high technical competence. I am excited to announce that the recipient for this award is Jackson Robenn for his Cubist inspired artwork completed in Year 9 Sculpture. Congratulations to Jackson for this achievement!

I would also like to congratulate all of our award winners in Years 7, 8 and 9! Congratulations as well to all exhibiting students whose work was on display! The quality of work presented this year, as always impressed all. We, as a teaching team are so lucky to be able to teach and work with so many talented young artists!

As always thank you to all the staff and students who have worked tirelessly to make both our Art Shows successful. Thank you to the East Campus Visual Arts team Emma Butler, Maria Garcia, Tracy Griffith and Lynton Perry, as well as our Year 7 teachers Rebecca Johnson, Raphaella Roden, Jessica Rogosic and Katherine Sip.

We still have one project to look forward to this year; the completion of the Year 9 Mural which will be installed in the near future. Keep an eye out for news regarding the installation of this artwork!

Connor Scott (Class of 2013) - 50km for 50 days!

Connor Scott (Class of 2013) - 50km for 50 days! Yes you read that correctly, McKinnon alumni student Connor Scott from the Class of 2013, is running 50km every day for 50 days to raise funds and awareness for Speak & Share.

Speak & Share are a Not For Profit Organisation that encourages tough conversations and challenges the stigma associated with mental health. Through their preventative proactive approach, they facilitate school, corporate and sporting club programs, as well as local events to connect the community and raise awareness to positively impact mental health awareness.

Connor’s extraordinary act of endurance and resilience comes on the back of his passion for empowering others, especially youth, to speak up about their mental health.

He is wanting to raise $50,000 for Speak & Share, to provide 2500 kids with the opportunity to learn about how speaking up, and showing vulnerability is in fact an act of courage, and not a weakness.
The McKinnon community are following along and supporting Connor on this journey. A Go Fund Me page has been set up to facilitate any donations to Connor’s cause. This page can be found here: https://www.gofundme.com/f/connors-50km-for-50-days

This Friday (1st December) is Day 48 for Connor, and the run will be happening at Duncan Mackinnon from 4pm. All members of the McKinnon community are invited down to support Connor.

Anthony Breslin Art Mural Project

Last Thursday, our Year 9 Students welcomed award-winning artist Anthony Breslin to assembly. Known for his eclectic and evocative style, he spoke to our students about an exciting upcoming project.

As our first 2-year graduating cohort of East Campus, during their final weeks on campus, our students will be mentored by Anthony as artist-in-residence with our own Art team, to create a large-scale art mural next to the East Campus outdoor basketball courts.

Inspired playfully by the notion of Wisdom and Service, a visual narrative incorporating Anthony’s iconic characters such as bugs, flowers and hearts will be created from 3D canvases of various sizes for the students to personalise. The finished piece will see these works applied over the exterior wall, coming together in a captivating scene to reflect McKinnon’s creative voices and aspirations. We are incredibly proud of our students and the Year 9s will be remembered for years to come as the first students to experience two years at East Campus.

I would like to thank Anthony Breslin and his team for creating this special opportunity for our Year 9 students. I’d also like to thank Peter Quinn, our Facilities team, Peter Eglezos and our Art team, as well as our Year 9 Student Managers, particularly Melinda Howard for facilitating this project during a busy time. I know it will be admired and appreciated for many years to come.

East Campus Twilight Concert

Well done to everyone involved in the East Campus Twilight Concert which was an absolute delight.

The Ovenden Band, World Music Ensemble, Keenan Strings, Percussion Groups, Choir, Extension Ensembles and Intermediate Stage Band all delivered captivating performances. Each ensemble showcased their unique talents and musicality.

Thank you to our ensemble directors: James Morrissey, Karen Nansen, Blanka West, Georgina Mead, Sergei Golovko, Stuart Cook, Stuart Byrne, the entire music staff and the AV team. Thank you also to Megan Papworth, Clare Bugeja and Dmitry Serebrianik for the organisation of this event.

Year 10 & 11 Theatre Studies Night

Congratulations to all Years 10 and 11 Theatre Studies students who took part in their performance night Friday 10 November.

The Year 11s took on a performance taking on the challenge of an Epic Theatre script naturalistic choices, while the Year 10s looked at Climate Change and its impact through non-naturalistic conventions.

What an incredible night showcasing all your hard work and incredible effort throughout the semester. You should all be so proud of the work you produced!

VCE Music Performance Night

VCE Music Performance Night took place on Wednesday 8 November. The night was a celebration of the extraordinary talent, dedication, and passion displayed by our Years 10-11 music students throughout the year. The students honed their musicianship skills in performance, analysis, and composition and proudly presented their best performance pieces from their folio of music works.

The performances presented were a testament to the countless hours of practice, the unwavering enthusiasm, and the sheer determination and passion that our students have invested in their VCE musical pursuits. Congratulations to JJ Braithwaite 10B, Anthony Kostelac 11G, Bella Livne 11I, Arnav Mahajan 10J, Katelyn Nguyen 10L and William Pendlebury 11K.

Year 7 and Year 8 Cricket Success

The Year 7 cricket team were set to repeat the current Year 8's work from last year and become the SMR Champions for 2023. The first match against Cheltenham was a tough fought battle, only getting the final runs during the 18th over.

A nerve racking grand final match approached us with Dromana exceeding 150 runs in their first match. A great bowling display by a few individuals set the tone for the match by keeping Dromana to 95 runs total. Through an excellent early performance from the top order of batsmen allowed McKinnon to chase down the total with 5 overs to spare in the innings. It was truly a dominant display by all involved on the day with a special mention to Asher Dunne for helping out the boys.

Year 8 Cricket SMR Final

After dispatching of Edenbrook Secondary College in the SMR Quarter Final, the all conquering Year 8 Cricket team returned to Aspendale Gardens to face Cheltenham Secondary College in the SMR Semi Final.

Batting first, we managed to smash up a great total of 5/196 in our allotted 20 overs with Archer Hankin anchoring the innings with 50 not out, Ayan Arya batting beautifully for 43, Captain, Tanish Singh making 39 and Harvey Weigall coming in at the end of the innings and belting 30 off about 15 balls.

In reply, Cheltenham actually batted very well but we were able to restrict them to 4/160 and claim victory. Alex Bridges, Adam Arbaitman and Ishi Tiwari all claimed a wicket each for us.

This set up for McKinnon to play Frankston High in the final and after winning the toss, we chose to bat first. Harish Salwathura and Tanish Singh batted very aggressively and set up our very respectable total of 4/176. Harish made 58, Tanish 38 and Harvey Weigall again controlled the end of the innings with 31 not out.

Frankston started pretty well in reply but Adam Arbaitman changed the game with three wickets in three overs to have us in control of the match. Frankston never threatened after that and made 8/103 in reply. Riva Guliya, Ishi Tiwari and Neel Parab joined Adam with a wicket each for the bowlers.

Thistlelonian Grand Reunion 2023

On Saturday October 28th we brought together 11 year levels for our Annual Thistlelonian Grand Reunion, and for the first time, it was held at the East Campus. There was a fantastic atmosphere, with attendees impressed by the new campus facilities. The event included a special afternoon tea for the Class of 1973, who celebrated 50 years since their graduation.

We truly enjoyed seeing old friends reconnect and reminisce about their days at McKinnon. The spirit of the McKinnon alumni community makes these events truly special. Thank you to the staff, committee and volunteers involved in making the event so memorable.

State Athletic Finals

On Monday 16th October 11 of our athletes competed at State Finals. Once again the team were challenged by some inclement weather conditions showcasing all four seasons! But this did not dampen their spirits. Making it to State level is a phenomenal achievement and all athletes should be proud of being the best in the State. Results from the day were:

Valedictory Dinner

This week has seen many Year 12 events including dress up day, the Year 12 Assembly and the Valedictory Dinner, which was held at the Crown casino last night. So many celebrations which mark an incredible milestone for our Year 12 students.

Valedictory is such a heartwarming event, and it was lovely to see the parents attending, who are always so grateful to our teachers and our school. As we know, this connection with families is one of the secrets to the success of McKinnon.

I congratulate everyone who helped to organise these events and all the staff who were in attendance to support our Class of 2023.

Year 12 Dress Up Day 2023

On Tuesday 10th October our Class of 2023 added a splash of colour to the school with the annual Year 12 Dress-up day.

The costumes were outstanding and created a memorable highlight for the students in their final week of classes.

Guest Physics Speaker: Misha Machlak (Class of 2015)

Former McKinnon student Misha Machlak of the graduating class of 2015 was generous enough to speak to current year 10 and 11 Physics students about his experience working for the Bureau of Meteorology (BoM).

His presentation in the school theatre contained valuable insights about the Science of modelling and predicting the weather, but also into post-high school study and employment opportunities related to the students' studies. The students were shown real-time video feeds, data streams and weather models from BoM assets all around the country, as well as 3D print replicas of record-setting hailstones and footage from various extreme weather events. It was a fantastic opportunity for McKinnon Physics students to see many ways that the Physics they are learning is applied in Meteorology, and to reflect upon their own goals for future studies and careers in Physics.

We are very grateful to Misha for his time and will continue to look for opportunities to host professional guests from relevant industries to present to the students and compliment their studies.

Cultural Diversity Week

As part of our multicultural and inclusive community, we have been celebrating Cultural Diversity week this week, which is devoted toward learning and understanding the arts, traditions and heritages of different parts of the world.

Staff got involved and dressed up in traditional clothing from different cultures and there was a variety of different foods to try out for lunch. Students were able to set up food stalls like Mango Lassi, Falafels and Haman Teshan. Year 7 students enjoyed Greek dancing and the East Campus students participated in ‘Zorba Till You Drop’.

An Origami workshop was hosted to practise this amazing Japanese artform and some of our school’s Spanish and Chinese singers sang traditional songs and did some fun karaoke. Bharatanatyam was performed by Year 7 and 8 dancers.

One activity loved by so many students was the Henna hand painting. And lastly, self-defence professionals came over to teach Year 8 students some martial arts.

This has been an incredible event that provided the opportunity to make new friendships and foster greater understanding and appreciation of different cultures.

Thank you to all the staff involved and I would like to particularly acknowledge Rekha Nayyar for her dedication in putting together this incredible week of inclusive celebrations

Year 12 Music Night

McK Chess Championship

After almost seven weeks and more than 150 games of exciting chess, the 2023 McK Chess Championship was concluded on Friday 18 August when Steve from Year 11 (McK rating 1513 and defending champion) took on Timothy from Year 11 (McK rating 1459) in the Gold medal match.

It was a very evenly matched final with both players winning one game each under the standard time control. With the match tied at 1-1, the contest came down to blitz tiebreaks, and it was more a test of nerves than over-the-board chess skills. In the end, Steve managed to edge out Timothy in one of the most memorable finals at the McKinnon Championship in recent years.

The supporting Bronze medal match, which was played on the same day as the final, featured 2022 runner-up, Aryan from Year 12, and 2021 runner-up, Gregory from Year 12. This was another exciting and close contest with the match also going all the way to blitz tiebreaks. Eventually, Gregory came out victorious and took the bronze.

The McK Chess Club would like to thank all participants for their effort and commitment in this year’s championship, as well as all the spectators for creating such a wonderful atmosphere.

Winter Concert 2023

The annual Winter Concert was held on Wednesday 30th August at the Robert Blackwood Hall at Monash University and what an incredible celebration of music and performance it was. This event is always a pleasure to attend.

I sincerely congratulate all the students and staff involved. The hours spent rehearsing certainly paid off. I extend my gratitude to all the families and friends who came to experience this incredible evening. Having your support means so much.

All of our music staff have done such an incredible job navigating this very difficult time with the sudden loss of our colleague and friend Mr Andrew Jacobs, to whom the evening was dedicated.

I would particularly like to acknowledge Megan Papworth, Clare Bugeja and Dmitry Serebrianik who put this event together. Thank you to all the Performing Arts team for their work in preparing for this showcase event, and to all staff who attended the evening concert - assisting with student management.

Our community has come together to celebrate our student's talent, and I am sure you will agree with me when I say I could not be more proud.

Life Saving Victoria Award of Excellence

We are excited to announce that on Sunday night, 13 August, the Hampton Life Saving Club and ��ܽ��Ƶapp Life Saving Program was recognised with an Award of Excellence from Life Saving Victoria at their 20 year awards celebration.

In this program, a number of Year 9 students gained their Surf Rescue Certificate and participated in an engaging Life Saving Program that was run at the school and Hampton Beach. Students had a great amount of fun swimming in the waves, learning to rescue board paddle and gaining life skills in emergency management.

It has been an absolute pleasure to see these two communities join together to support and enable young people to branch out, acquire new competences and build confidence, resilience and meaningful connections in their community.

Programs like this are only possible with an exceptional group of people behind them. Thank you so much to everyone who has been a part of this - the McKinnon Staff and Hampton Life Saving Volunteers. In particular a massive shout out to the young trainers from HLSC who were all exceptional educators. Not only teaching life long skills but also being mentors to this group of students. It was wonderful to see our students take this opportunity and be inspired by other young people in their community.

We look forward to continuing to build on this program and seeing many more of our students take part to gain first hand experience of life saving, water safety, working as a team and mentoring others.

Athletics Carnival 2023

On Thursday 3 August, McKinnon staff and students were dressed in their Movie character inspired outfits all ready for the McKinnon’s Annual Athletics Carnival at Duncan Mackinnon Reserve.

There was much excitement around the track as students hotly contested in all the track & field events and the annual Year 12 Quidditch competition, to earn valuable points for their house.

It was a closely run event with only a few points separating the houses on the scoreboard.

The final scores for the day were finally tallied and…

4th place with 2495 points was Chisholm
3rd place with 2547 points was Monash
2nd place with 3108 points was Flynn
1st place with 3162 points was GILMORE!

Congratulations to all the Gilmore students who participated in as many events as possible and provided valuable house points.

Congratulations also to all the students who won their age group events and have qualified to compete at the Kingston Division Championships on Thursday 24 August.

Pitsa Binnion Senior Centre

I am thrilled to announce to the community that the Senior Centre building on the main campus of ��ܽ��Ƶapp will be renamed as the ‘Pitsa Binnion Senior Centre’, as approved by The Hon. Natalie Hutchins MP, Minister for Education and Minister for Women.

On Monday 31 July we held a special assembly where Mrs Binnion was honoured and the staff and students were informed.

This occasion was both momentous and exciting as we celebrate the incredible difference Pitsa has made to the thousands of students and families that have passed through ��ܽ��Ƶapp.

Year 10 Portsea Camp

Last week, 250 Year 10 students travelled to Portsea for camp. They completed activities that included the flying fox, giant swing, high ropes, archery, orienteering, bush walking and beach activities. Other highlights included the taco bowl and souvlakis from the kitchen. They were very lucky with the incredible weather, no rain and blue skies every day! Overall, students represented McKinnon with aplomb, displaying exemplary teamwork, resilience and respect for the community.

I'd like to thank all of the staff who attended this event:

Camp 1 - Kellie Felmingham, Krishna Fleming, David Machin, Myles Keleman, Dafina Spahiu, Hannah Sclarr, Sarah Mullane, Riley Price, Phoebe Ponsford and Molly McFarlane.

Camp 2 - Lachlan Noble, Natalie Same, Myles Keleman, Rekha Nayyar, James Bridges, Rachel Walker, Nick Gledhill and Eliza Portelli.

Reflection from Mia Le, Year 10

The year 10’s camp at Mckinnon Secondary College was fantastic this year. They visited Portsea Camp, and they had an amazing time there. The youngsters had a great time participating in every activity. The Portsea camp's educators and staff were friendly and fed Mckinnon students the tastiest meals ever!There were nighttime activities that we really enjoyed. They were a movie night and a trivia night.

The dorms were great to hang out with our friends and the ocean views were lovely. We had the opportunity to visit the beach, have a stroll along the shore, and take in the fresh sea air! There were so many enjoyable things to do there for us to pass the time. I loved the year 10’s camp this year because it left everyone completely stunned. We had the loveliest memories from the Portsea camp, and all of the students are extremely grateful for the chance we were given.

Year 12 Trivia Night

Last term, we hosted the highly anticipated fourth Annual Year 12 Trivia Night, and it was a night to remember.

One of the highlights of the evening was the 'dance battle,' which showcased the talent and fun of our students. Congratulations are in order for Ari G, who won best dancer.

The event also celebrated style and creativity, with The Injustice Brotherhood being recognised as the best-dressed group.

Additionally, we want to congratulate the trivia champions of the night - Dads.

None of this would have been possible without the hard work and dedication of our organising committee. They poured countless hours into planning and executing this event, ensuring its success.

The sense of belonging and happiness on the night was a testament to the strong bonds and camaraderie within our Year 12 community. It was wonderful to witness everyone coming together, enjoying each other's company, and creating lasting memories.

Once again, we want to express our gratitude to everyone who contributed to the success of the Annual Year 12 Trivia Night. We look forward to future events that will continue to foster a sense of unity and joy among our students.
